Threading Tools for Through Holes and Blind Holes
Spiral point taps push chips forward and are commonly used for through-hole tapping, while spiral flute taps evacuate chips back toward the tool shank and are typically selected for blind holes. Straight flute taps provide a simple and rigid option for suitable materials and threading conditions.
Choose a Threading Tool by Hole Type
| Application | Recommended tool | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Through holes | WTP-POT Spiral Point Tap | Pushes chips forward through the hole |
| Blind holes | WTP-SFT Spiral Flute Tap | Pulls chips back toward the tool shank |
| Rigid general tapping | Straight Flute Tap | Simple, rigid geometry for suitable materials |
| Long nut threads | WTP-NRT Nut Tap | Designed for nut production and long thread engagement |
| Abrasive materials or high wear | Carbide Taps | Micro-grain carbide improves wear resistance |
| Flexible CNC threading | Carbide Thread Mills | Useful for difficult materials, large sizes and controlled thread quality |
Threading Tool Selection FAQ
Should I use a spiral point or spiral flute tap?
Use a spiral point tap for through holes because it pushes chips forward. Use a spiral flute tap for blind holes because it lifts chips back toward the tool shank.
What is the best tap for a blind hole?
A spiral flute tap is the usual starting point. Match its helix, substrate and coating to the workpiece material, thread depth and coolant condition.
When should I choose a forming tap?
Choose a forming tap for ductile materials when chip-free threading, strong threads and consistent production are priorities. Confirm that the material and prepared hole diameter are suitable.
When is a thread mill better than a tap?
Thread milling is useful for difficult materials, larger diameters, interrupted cuts and applications where one cutter must produce several thread sizes or where tool-breakage risk must be controlled.
What information is needed for a threading-tool recommendation?
Provide the thread standard and size, through or blind hole, thread depth, workpiece material, machine interface and coolant condition.
Carbide Taps and Thread Milling Tools
For demanding materials, high cutting speeds or applications requiring high wear resistance, carbide tapping and thread milling tools provide an alternative to conventional HSS taps. Winvera offers carbide taps and thread mills for a range of CNC threading applications.
